Mine Pool Study
Year: 2016-2019
Predictive Tools for Underground Mine Pool Formation (2016-2019)
Funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior (OSMRE), this project developed an empirical GIS model to predict the hydrological responses of underground coal mines. By applying neural networking and multivariate analysis to data from 28 Ohio mines, the research produced a tool that helps regulators and industry members determine the likelihood of mine pool formation and potential surface discharge. This ensures better environmental planning and risk management for mining permits.
